The deserts, tropical forest, and tundra are considered to be fragile ecosystems because of the long regeneration time when vegetation has been destroyed. They are also fragile because of the low participation.

The plants in the desert are slow growing because of the low rainfall. If someone destroys a number of plants in the desert, say with an ATV or 4WD, it can be many years before the wounds heal and the plants return. Also, the tracks of such a vehicle on the side of a hill can quickly become arroyos during a heavy rain, changing the landscape of the desert and causing further damage.
