Why would you need a big hard drive?

Big hard drives are useful for storing large amounts of data, as well as holding large pieces of software and programs to use.

As the price of hard drive technology has gone down, it is more common to see default laptops and PCs with larger and larger hard drives.

Take, for example, "budget" laptops. Most cheaper laptops come with a 500Gb hard drive as standard. It is not uncommon for people to have PCs with 1TB or even two or three, depending on their needs.

As stated above, it is important to remember that hard drives also keep your software and programs as well as data. Therefore it would be unwise to make the assumption that you can skimp on the hard drive if you don't plan to keep a lot of files on your machine, as you still need a fair amount of space for programs, and your Operating System.

As examples, people who need exceptionally large hard drives are people who work with either high quality audio or high quality video, as both will take up a lot of hard drive space very quickly. It is common to see graphic designers, video specialists and sound technicians with racks of half a dozen or more hard drives for one computer, all at 2TB each, bringing their total to 12TB. Obviously, this is an insane amount for the average person, and won't be seen in most peoples' houses.
