My 88 had a similar problem, replaced all the ignition system, plugs, coil, leads distributor cap & rotor. Then fuel filter, found a problem in the return fuel regulator and replaced it, problem starten again after 6 months and sourced the problem to the fuel pump. There was not enough fuel coming through on startuo and accelleration and used to backfire as well. Aussie Bill
check/replace spark plugs and wires
I had a similar problem on a Ford truck and it turned out to be the ignition switch. The truck would start just fine but when I released the ignition key the truck would die. I replaced the switch and problem was gone.
yes a fuel filter problem can cause a starting problem because if your fuel filter blocks the gas wont flow through and you wont get gas to the pistons to start the engine
It could very well be a stopped fuel filter. Follow the fuel line from the engine to the tank to find it. I have the same problem.. replaced fuel filter, replaced dizzy cap, rotor button, ignition leads.. (all 10 of them.).. turns out my problem was the mechanic put leads 1 - 2 backwards when he replaced the rotor button. Also, the screw in my rotor button would come loose, dont know if this is a common problem... but a bit of 'plumbers tape' solved it. :)
fuel pump or the ignition module needs to be replaced
Spark plugs, distributor cap, and distributor rotor should be replaced. Ignition coil should be checked for corrosion at the post. Clean or replace as needed. Spark plug wires should be inspected for corrosion. Clean or replace as needed. PCV valve should be cleaned. Fuel filter should be relaced. Air filter should be inspected and replaced if needed. Oil and filter should be changed if applicable.
1) Check for ignition problem. If you have a distributor, pay special attention to distibutar pickup and also ignition wires. 2) Check the TPS. Voltage should change smoothly as you move the throttle.
have you replaced the fuel filter
A person can find the cab air filter on the Lincoln MKZ directly behind the glove box. The air filter should be replaced between 6 months and 1 year to improve cirrculation.
You may have a faulty ignition switch. The ignition switch feeds the fuel pump.
