i had same problem i was told to add water conditioner from pet shop it helps remove chlorine from tap water and had aloe vera which helps protect scales. However what is most likely your problem, because goldfish can't survive in chlorine for as long as a week, is that you have your fish in too small of a bowl/tank. Having your fish in to small of a bowl/tank would result in a build up of ammonia (which is produced by your fish eating, pooping, and breathing). This build-up would damage your fish's gills and cause it to die. What could also be your problem is that you don't have enough aeration (if you saw your fish gasping for breath at the surface before it died than you don't have enough aeration.) An easy way to fix this problem is to purchase and air pump, bubble curtain, or an aerator at your local pet shop. One other possible cause for your goldfish's death is that it was just plain out unhealthy. If left untreated usually the fish would die from its ailment within a week- two weeks . Next time you get a goldfish put it in a larger container ( goldfish thrive in tanks of at least ten gallons ) and use an aerator. You should be fine as long as you use a conditioner and have a strong filter.

A number of things cancause your goldfish to die.

Look here to decide what your goldfish could have died from

Was your goldfish lethargic (not moving much)?
Was the tank 10 gallons or smaller?
Were you feeding them the right amount of food every day according to their size?
Did you take out some of the water every week?
Did you have a filter and aerator?
Did you change the filter when it got to gross?
Did you over crowd the goldfish?
Did you often touch the goldfish?
Did you add certain chemicals at the right amounts? (Bio Boost, Stress coat etc.?)
Did you let the water rest before you added it into the tank?
Is the water dirty or a strange color?
Do you PH test?
Was the PH high?
Do you ammonia test?
Was the ammonia high?
Did your goldfish have blackish color all over it?
Was your goldfish upside down at the top of the tank?

If your goldfish was lethargic, it could have died of-

Old Age
Ammonia Poisoning
Stress

If you were not feeding them the right amount of food-

They could have starved
They could have been overfed
Stress

If the tank was ten gallons or smaller

It may have been overcrowded-
Ammonia Poisoning
Stress

If you did not take out some water every week it could have been

Pollution
Ammonia Poisoning
High PH
Stress

If you did not add air to your take or filtrate it-

Lack of oxygen
Pollution
Ammonia Poisoning
High PH
High Nitrates/Nitrites

If you did not change the filter-

Pollution
Ammonia Poisoning
High PH
High Nitrates/Nitrites

If you had more than one fish per 7 gallons (Approximately)

Overcrowded
Pollution
Ammonia Poisoning
High PH
High Nitrates/Nitrites

If you often touch the goldfish-

Removal of the protective slime coating on the scales.

If you did not add the right amount of chemicals-

Pollution
Not enough chemicals

Did not let the water rest

Water too hot
Water too cold
Water has bad chemicals

If the water was a strange, dirty color-

High PH,
Pollution,
Ammonia Poisoning
High Nitrates/Nitrites

Don't PH test-

High PH
Low PH

Don't Ammonia Test-
High Ammonia
Ammonia Poisoning
Ammonia Burn

Ammonia High-

Ammonia Poisoning
Ammonia Burn

Goldfish has a black-ish color-

Ammonia Burn

Goldfish Upside-down at the top of the tank-

Swim Bladder Disease

I bought a tank and 2 goldfish 3 weeks ago. After the first week I changed 100% of the water in the tank with water that I had kept in a bowl for 24 hours, within 3 days the 2 fish died. I then bought 2 new fish and found out that it is recommeded to only change 10-20% of the water which is wht I did after 1 week, then the next day 1 of the fish died. Does anyone know why?

When conditions are not as they should be in an aquarium, usually the weakest fish gets sick and dies first followed later by the next weakest etc etc etc. You probably have a problem. Is your tank overstocked ? The basic rule is "1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water". Is the filter working properly? (use test kit for Ammonia and Nitrite) Are you changing 50% of the water weekly. If you are not overstocked and the answer to the other 2 questions is yes, then maybe the fish was a weakling but if the answer is no to either question then you are to blame for the fishes death and more fish will die particularly if you don't fix the problem.

the new goldfish may not be use to the temperatureor the water or any other reason. The goldfish die because they aren't adapted to the envioment.

You must also take care to use unchlorinated water. Chlorine is a poison added to tap water to kill germs. The concentration is not nearly high enough to kill you, but it will certainly kill a goldfish.

you must ajust them to the temp over night or they will die of shock

This is usually caused by misinformation and a lack of knowledge about true goldfish needs.
One fancy goldfish needs at minimum a 20 gallon tank, with 10 gallons per additional fancy goldfish that you add to your tank (so that's 30 gallons for 2, 40 gallons for 3 etc).
In addition, they need lots of filtration with a good filter, regular weekly water changes of at least 50%, and usually the biggest error is that a tank has not been cycled (Nitrogen cycle) before adding fish.
This is done by setting the system up without fish, and then adding an ammonia source with either pure ammonia (you can get this at your local fish store) or by adding some fish food regularly to begin to create good bacteria; this process can take at least 4 week before you will start getting a reading of 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and some reading of nitrates (you want it to be less than 20 at least)

A number of possibilities.

1. The water wasn't suitable; contaminated by chemicals, or too hot or too cold. Tap water is generally not good for fish; you should run the aquarium pumps for a couple of days to aerate the water and purge some contaminants.

2. Salt. Goldfish require fresh water; if this tank has EVER had salt water, it's probably too salty for goldfish or any other fresh-water fish

3. Insufficient aeration.
