You need oxygen to breath, rain and water to drink, you need an atmosphere to heat and cool certain parts of the planet. Without an atmosphere meteors would hit the ground and leave big craters, instead of burning up in the atmosphere, most of the time. Look at the Moon. It has no atmosphere. It also has no life.
