The ignition is shot - just replaced mine $315.00.
If you have a remote starter, you can shut it off normally, remove the key from the ignition, and then proceed to start it up remotely, after which you can return the key to the ignition and turn it to the engine mode, NOT the starting mode.
remove the sttering column shroud. put the key in and turn it to the run position. on the botton of the column where the cylinder goes in there is a button that has to be pushed. the cylinder will slide out. if the key will not turn, you will have to drill out the button.

Your ignition also locks your steering and at times you need to move the steering wheel a little and at the same turn your ignition key. Then you should be able to turn the key and start the engine. Hal
I am not sure what causes this, but I have had times when my ignition key would not turn. The solution to the main problem is to turn the steering wheel slightly. This usually allows the ignition key to turn.

it is either the key is worn out or the key cylinder in the ignition is worn out.
is it a ford? push the key in further and then turn it
