You don't have to change the toner cartridge ever, as long as you don't plan on printing with it anymore. But if you want to continue to print legible papers then the toner cartridge will need to be changed when it reaches a point where you notice that it is skipping all or parts of words, becoming lighter or just losing overall print quality. If the cartridge is relatively new and you start to see some of these issues then it may be defective but if you want know how to handle that, then you will need to ask that question later. Otherwise you will need to just need to decide on the best and most practical way to go about buying a new cartridge, also subject for another question.
