The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the base of the neck just below the Adam's apple. It is responsible for producing hormones that regulate our metabolism, as well as other body organs.

When the thyroid receives thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) from the pituitary gland it produces triiodothyronine which is commonly referred to as T3, and thyroxine which is commonly referred to as T4. These thyroid hormones are important because they regulate the metabolism, protein synthesis and sensitivity to other hormones in the body.

When the body produces too much or too little thyroid hormones, symptoms of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism will occur.
