There are no advantages for having a pet chimp for either the chimp or the human. As babies, they are easy to care for and can pretty much be raised as a human child. However, once they reach adolescence, they become 7-10 times stronger than a human. No matter how loving a relationship a chimp has with their human family, there is always the possibility they will lose their temper and attack, or attack a neighbour. Not even the trainers in Hollywood can handle them after this, and usually get rid of them or keep them in cages their whole lives after a childhood of severe abuse.

Also, it is not kind to the chimp. When they become too strong to handle, many zoos cannot take pet chimps, because chimps learn their social skills from watching the members of their community as they get older, and they do not know how to interact properly with other chimps. They also cannot be put into the wild for this reason. Sanctuaries are usually full to capacity. Some owners are so desperate they resort to sending their chimp to a biomedical lab to be used as a research subject. Not to mention the fact that these baby chimps are taken from their mothers to be raised by humans. This has exactly the same effect it would on a human mother and child.

Chimps are also very endangered in the wild, and keeping them as pets gives the impression that the species is stable, when nothing could be further from the truth.

If you love chimps, do some research and help protect them in the wild, or fundraise or volunteer for a sanctuary. But never ever ever get a pet chimp. It ends badly for all involved.

Chimpanzees are complex, highly intelligent, and exceptionally social animals. They do not belong in captivity.

Chimpanzees who are currently in captive settings, should be in sanctuaries, devoted first and foremost to their long term care. They should have environments appropriate to their physical and psychological needs and caregivers with plenty of training and experience.

It is impossible to provide a chimpanzee with appropriate space, protection, and social/emotional/cognitive enrichment in a private home. Those who believe otherwise are putting themselves and the chimpanzee at risk.

Far, far too many chimpanzees have died or languished in woefully inappropriate conditions by well-meaning, but misguided or unknowledgable people who believed that they would make good pets.

Do chimps like to be pet?

Most times no. Most people who get a chimp as a "pet" (while there are not many), get them and think they can train them to act like a child and this isn't true. The people try and take the wild and chimp behaviors out of the chimp and once the chimp reaches maturity they act out and are too much to handle. Because of this most (almost all) "pet" chimps are sent of to sanctuaries, breeding facilities or labs when they reach maturity at about 6 years old. The only time a "pet" chimp will be really happy is when they are babies getting all the attention. There are rare occasions where a chimp will seem happy being a "pet" chimp and treated like a child, but they are not as happy as they probably would be being in the wild, or if they were a "pet" but with their own kind in very large (zoo type) enclosures. Now, however people who have chimps and have them living like chimps in a zoo, in large enclosures, with their own kind, and don't try to train them, they for the most part are happy being "pets" or being captive chimps at least.
