This is a very odd question, but I would think that the diseases were easily spread, such as Yellow Fever and the Plague. Yellow Fever and the Plague are VERY similar. They both came from the rat/rodent or the horrible bugs. Also, if we were in the 1600's right now, I would not be able to answer this question, only if you were sight enough for me to actually face-to-face speak.
Another reason is the slaves. Slaves were used usually, here through there. This was when no-one DARED to actually try and stop the slave act and make the villagers WAKE UP from there stupid minds. Hope this worked!
