Hi, i would like the opportunity to answer this question... having the year make and model would be helpful but here is the general answer. This is a common problem with Mercedes Benz vehicles as they start with a symptom known has "delayed engagement" or a few extra seconds before reverse will "lock" into place. First check to ensure the Transmission Fluid is full (follow manufacturers instructions) if possible. next have the transmission pan removed and check the filter for obstruction or excessive contamination. Be sure that there aren't any other subtle symptoms in the forward gears; late shifting, overdrive problems, etc.

The good news is that in most cases just the section of the transmission can be repaired.

You or the shop would have to consider the cost of transmission removal, tear down, wear of remaining components, mileage of the vehicle in determining if the transmission should be completely rebuild. But in a financial pinch the transmission may only require a repair. So request to the expert you may be dealing with what your options are.

Sincerely,

Robert

How do cars move in reverse?

If the car is facing up a hill, simply put the car in nuetral. :D When placed in "reverse" an extra gear is added to the chain of gears in the transmission which causes the final drive to the wheels to turn in the opposite direction.
