Next time do not put a container of ball bearings in the engine.
It is the knock sensor. It retards the timing if the engine pings or rattels.
Try 87 Octane if engien does not "ping" excessively you should be OK If engine "pings" try 89 Octane
Advance the distributor until the engine pings then back off to the point the engine stops pinging, tighten the distributor. This will require driving a few test runs.

Mine pings also. It's the heat shields that help protect the engine against the temperatures of the catalytic converter and muffer. Hope This Helps.

If you listen to the engine under load conditions and it rattles or pings then you should use a higher octane fuel but you should research more on this through these pages to determine the need for a higher octane value before you tear something up.

If it is a v8 engine ? It will run it's best at 8 degrees BTDC. If it pings under a load then move it back to 6 degrees BTDC.
