For some unknown reason, the majority of mammal species have a lifespan that includes about 1 billion heart beats. Small mammals have higher heart rates and use up those heartbeats much more quickly, dying of old age in a few years. Rhinos have slow heart rates, so they live up to 40 years. The real question is why humans can live to be a hundred. For some reason, healthy humans can live until we use up about two billion heartbeats, in some cases even more.
