The tail lights are interchangeable, the only difference is the chrome trim that was standard on the Caprice

The tail lights are on a separate wiring than the blinker/brake lights. Look for a blown fuse or a broken/loose wire.
Check the fuse for your tail lights, usually when all of your lights in your instrument cluster are out, it usually meas that either your tail light fuse, or possibly both tail lights are burned out. this is a "safety" feature built into most cars to alert you that there is a problem with your tail lights.

Open up the trunk lid, find the Phillips screws above the tail lights and the whole tail light bucket will pull out as one piece. Light sockets are behind.
The first check would be the fuse for the dash lights. If the dash lights are out too then it is likely to be the fuse.
