The above is the original answer, but it was a long drawn out battle that Itachi planned ahead of time so that he could kill Orochimaru ( who Sasuke had somehow got his chakra ) destroying the curse mark on Sasuke and giving him his eyes.

He was sitting in the beginning, cast a Genjutsu which made it look like Sasuke had caught him unaware, etc etc cue the big long drawn out battle scene where it seems Itachi has won since there both drained of chakra and he still had Susano'o Botta-bing Botta-boom he touches Sasuke, says his final words, and proceeds to collapse dying in the rain. Sasuke looks stunned, then he collapses next to him and passes out from chakra exhaustion.

Sasuke wants to kill Itachi because Itachi killed their clan, the whole village, and their parents. Also, Sasuke is Itachi's little brother. The reason why Itachi didn't kill Sasuke is because he said that he's not even worth killing. So now, Itachi's in Konoha with a friend and wants the Nine-Tails Fox in Naruto. Jiraiya asked Naruto to go on an adventure with him to search for his old friend Tsunade. He wants to look for Tsunade because she was requested to become the village's fifth Hokage. So when they first rented or bought a hotel, Naruto when in the room to practice his training by himself since Jiraiya got distracted by a cute woman (of course!). Then when Sasuke sees Kakashi injured, he is accidentally told by a Jounin that Itachi's back in the village and is after the Nine-Tails in Naruto. So Sasuke looks at the ramen shop (since that's where Naruto always eats), and asks the old man if he's seen Naruto. The old man says that he went with an old man with long white hair (Jiraiya). So Sasuke goes in the city where Naruto is and looks in every hotel he finds if they've seen a blonde hair boy with a stupid face around his age with an old man with white hair. Soon, Naruto hears a knock on his door. He thinks it's Jiraiya coming back after being turned down from the woman, but really, Itachi and his friend was there. He told Naruto to come outside with them so Naruto stepped outside of his hotel. The moment when Itachi's friend was about to shave off Naruto's legs, Sasuke comes and tells Itachi that he's going to kill him. And that's when the whole fight starts.
