Toprol-XL is merely an extended-release version of the same drug as is found in Lopressor.
In Roman numerals, XL would be 40. Toprol-XL is a prescription drug (metoprolol succinate) for the treatment of high blood pressure. The XL may imply that it was the 40th batch in a batch test, or that it was the 40th revision to the drug, but it may simply be an abbreviation of "excel".
Toprol-XL is a trade name for metoprolol succinate, an antihypertensive beta-blocker. It blocks sympathetic response (fight or flight) in the CNS, reducing BP and cardiac output.
Tartrate is the generic for Lopressor. Succinate is the generic for Toprol XL.
