The question is if the transmission is a standard or an automatic, if it is a standard then the transmission is located directly behind the bell housing which is bolted onto the rear of the engine, if it is an automatic then the transmission is bolted directly to the rear of the engine
For the 3.8L V6, The starter is bolted onto the front side of the transmission in all Cougars from 1989 to 1996. Be very careful to use penetrating oil to free the bolts from the transmission, as snapping the head off a bolt can be a VERY expensive mistake. I advise that a transmission specialist do this work.
The crankshaft positioning sensor is located between the engine and the transmission about one third way down looking from inside top of engine. It is not easy to find. You are looking for a connector wire with the sensor, it is bolted onto the transmission with a 10MM bolt.

The solenoids are inside of the transmission, You will have to remove the transmission pan and filter and they will be bolted onto the valve body in the transmission. You need to check and inspect the transmission wireing harness before replacing the shift solenoids.
