The transmission for the 4x4 has a different tailpiece so the transfer case can be bolted to the transmission The tailpiece on the transmission would have to be changed
I looked at www. motorcraft. com ( no spaces ) and the part numbers were the same for a remanufactured automatic transmission for the 1991 and 1994 Explorers Both the 1991 and 1994 use the A4LD automatic transmission for the 4X4 Explorers ( TRM 206 ) for the 2 wheel drive ( TRM 192 )

the ford 5.0 and ford 4.0 have a different bolt pattern and block spacing if this 4.0 is still the old German designed motor that they used from 1989 on it will not work . there is also a difference in the way the transmission is shifted in the 4.0 is electronic after sometime in the mid 90's to the older 5.0 aod transmission that was with t.v. cable to thottle body .
