The 7.62x54R is pretty much the only cartridge that that rifle will shoot. It is a RIMMED bottleneck cartridge, of relatively high power, and does not interchange with 30-06, .308, 8mm Mauser, or .303 British- rumors to the contrary. A POSSIBLE exception would be if the rifle had a chamber insert. These metal inserts are placed in the chamber, and are used with some rifles to permit the firing of pistol caliber ammunition for small game or inexpensive practice. The rifle would be a single shot, and rather awkward to fire.
