It really depends on how you use it. If you are using it in rough terrain and using it outdoors where it will be exposed to all sorts of elements, it won't last as long as if you use it as directed by Apple. It really varies how long a MacBook Pro will last depending on user configuration, how, where and what you use it for.
An example, I have had my MacBook Pro for around 3 years now (almost reaching that mark) and it is still working just as well as it did when I first purchased it. It is still working at top speeds and everything in it works just as well. I use my MacBook Pro at school, home, office and even in the garden sometimes when I need some light. My MacBook Pro has gone through drops, water splashes and even a fork hitting the screen. All the same, it still works just as well.
Please clarify: iMac? MacBook? MacBook Pro? Prices for any mac computer drop AFTER the newest edition comes out. This is a normal retail practice for these products (at least what I have seen the last 5 years).
