A sound card will only effect the audio component of media playback. It will not improve the quality of visual playback.
A better sound card can increase performance in applications that support hardware accelerated sound, particularly in games.
Well for one, with a sound card you get to hear sound from your computer. But no really, with better or high end sound cards, you get clearer better sounding sounds from your PC. That's all there is to advantages from sound cards, You get sound...Lol.
The sound card functions by converting digital data into analog information. It also converts analog data into digital data. The digital signal processor inside of the sound card is responsible for this.
That could be several things. You want to check your codecs first. That's the most likely cause if this only happens on some videos rather than most.Codecs are like the blueprints that tell your computer how to deal with audio formats.Without them audio won't function correctly.

Yes it definitely is a hardware issue. Check what kind of sound card you have in your computer by going to Device Manager in Windows. Then look up the sound card model and number on the web and see if it meets the requiremtns to be compatible with your needs. Definately sound card.

I'm assuming you mean which card is more necessary- and that would be a graphics card. Your computer has a decent sound card built into the motherboard but the on-board graphics are never enough for the better games. Unless you are a sound editor and/or a real sound snob you don't need a separate sound card.
Possibly. More likely, if your card has gone bad, you will have no sound output at all and video will be unaffected.
Your computer's sound card controls the sound coming out of your speakers. When your sound card is damaged, your sound will be distorted.
