From my research, this seems an unlikely occurrence in most normal situations. However, it is possible and could be fatal. Take care and try to use caution; pay attention to signs your phone is overheating or the battery is bulging and use a surge protector if possible.
Per Christine Torralba of Android Authority, there have been cases in the last five years in which a cell phone caused injury to the user due to overcharging the battery, some of which happened while the cell phone was continuing to charge. According to the article, a 2008 incident in Nepal happened to a 16 year old girl who was using her phone while charging it. She lost consciousness and died on her way to the hospital.

∙ 11y agoThat would be highly unlikely. Phones just don't explode that often. If everything is in good condition and you are not using it in an explosive atmosphere, you can strike that off your list of things to worry about.

Check that the charger is the right model for your phone and there wo't be a problem.
