A mechanical fuel pump can make noise if it's going bad -- it will sound like a noisy lifter.
Use a stethoscope or a broom handle between the pump and your ear while the engine is running and you should be able to pinpoint a noisy fuel pump pretty easy, just keep your face away from the fan while the engine is running.
