mousse doesn't damage your hair..it might dry it out though.. so i would use a conditioning mousse made by paul mitchell.

Mousse provides body to the hair. It can be used to achieve volume for those with straight hair. It can also be used to define waves or curls on textured hair.

Whether or not your hair looks good in a french braid and with or without mousse in it, is a matter of personal opinion. If you like your hair with mousse in it, then that is all that matters.
If it is an alcohol based mousse it can cause the hair to become dry and brittle. So when looking for a mousse make sure it is water based preferably without any alcohol in it.
