The mass of an object alone is not enough to determine whether it will float in water. You need to know the object's mass and its volume; in other words, its density. A kilogram of solid lead will sink in water. A kilogram of styrofoam will float. If an object is less dense than water it will float; if it is denser it will sink.

Why does only light things float in salt water?

Whether things float or sink this depend only on the density , the density of the salt water is aprox. 1030 kilogram per meter cube so if you but things have density less than that they will float , things with higher density sink.

Which material can float?

Any material with a density less that the density of water will float in water. The density of water is 1 kilogram per litre, or 1 kilogram per 100 cubic millimetres. So any material that has a density so that a cube of it with 100 millimetre sides weighs less than one kilo will float in (fresh) water. The density of sea water is slightly more than the density of fresh water so some things that sink in fresh water will float in sea water. The density of steel is about 8 times the density of water so a solid cube of steel will sink in water, however some objects (like ships) made from steel float in water. This is because the average density of the part of the ship that sinks into the water becomes equal to the density of water because it is full of air.

Would an object of g in volume and cm cubed be able to float in water?

An object will float in water if it has less density than the water. You can calculate the density of the object by dividing its mass by its volume. For comparison, the density of water is: * 1 gram / cubic centimeter * 1 kilogram / liter * 1000 kilograms / cubic meter

Would an inflated tyre weighing 30kg holding an object weighing 100kg float?

It could, if it contained enough air. To float on water, you would need about 1 liter of air for every kilogram you want to keep afloat.

What are the results of can water float on water?

Yes, water can float on water. This is because of surface tension, which allows objects with a lower density than water to float on its surface. Items like boats or water bugs can float because of this phenomenon.

Will a styrofoam cup float or sink in water?

A styrofoam cup will float in water because styrofoam is less dense than water, causing it to displace water and float.
