From this question, it seems that you are probably over 40 years old and you are currently in bifocals for near vision with nearsighted correction for distance on the top part of your glasses. We see many patients with this situation and LASIK can work for you, and here is how.

First of all, the LASIK can correct the vision for the distance vision assuming that you are otherwise a candidate for this procedure. It can correct fairly large amounts of nearsightedness as well as astigmatism. This solves your distance vision issue, but not the near vision.

For near vision you would have a choice of either getting some "over the counter" type reading glasses, or you could have one eye purposely undercorrected for monovision. In monovision one eye is focused for distance whereas the other for near. Many have worn contact lenses with this configuration successfully and it works for a lot of people with LASIK but a word of caution.

Not everyone like monovision. It can reduce the depth perception, and for people who critically need sharp distance vision may not be ideal. You should try this with simulation by contact lenses or glasses before making this a permanent change. The other option is to have what is known as modified monovision, and here the one eye is left less nearsighted which makes this an easier transition. The downside is that you would still need some glasses for reading smaller print. Your doctor can review these different options with you and help you to pick out which if any type of monovision would work for you.

We see many patients over the age of 40 who are extremely happy with their LASIK correction. Many do not mind reading glasses alone, and some are pleased with monovision. It really depends on how nearsighted you are to begin with. In general if you are very dependent on glasses, you will appreciate this, but if you can take your glasses off and read well, you might not be a good candidate.

After approximately age 40, the lens in the eye stiffens making it harder to focus up close. Because laser vision correction only affects the cornea, the procedures do not eliminate the need for reading glasses.

Are you eligible for lasik eye surgury?

To determine if you are a candidate for LASIK eye surgery you will need to have a screening exam which can be done at minimal or no charge in most locations. If you can see well with glasses or contacts and are in general healthy you will probably be a candidate for LASIK.

What eye conditions does lasik eye surgery correct?

LASIK can correct a wide range of vision problems related to the need for glasses or contact lenses. Ametropia, the condition of having an eye which is out of focus can be caused by a mismatch between the cornea and the optics of the rest of the eye resulting in light not being focused properly on the back of the eye to produce a clear image. The most frequently corrected vision problem is myopia or nearsightedness. Also correctable is farsightedness or hyperopia. Also there is a condition of assymetry of the cornea which is called astigmatism, and this can also be corrected by LASIK.Of interest is that many patients have a combination of two of these conditions together and this can also be corrected by LASIK. Most commonly nearsightedness with astigmatism. Also there is farsightedness with astigmatism. More uncommon is what is called "mixed astigmatism" where the eye is both near and farsighted at the same time in different meridians or directions. All of these conditions can be effectively treated with LASIK.More recently there is even the correction of irregular shapes in the cornea which are correctable by a variety of new methods of custom treatments. There is wavefront treatments based on the overall shape of the eye and topography guided treatments based on the shape of the cornea in a particular patient. Most patients do not need or derive additional benefit from these types of treatments, although wavefront "optimized" custom treatments have been found to provide better quality of vision and are widely used by advanced lasers available today.Other eye problems and diseases are not treatable with LASIK. Included is amblyopia or a lazy eye and presbyopia or the aging eye. In addition blurry vision due to diseases such as cataracts or glaucoma are treatable but not by LASIK procedures. For most people, if their vision is correctable with glasses or contact lenses, it will also be correctable in a more permanent way by LASIK vision correction.

What are the costs and benefits of Lasik eye surgery?

People who have lasik surgery generally no longer need to wear glasses. It improves their peripheral vision, which is limited when one wears glasses. The cost for lasik surgery ranges from $1500-$2200 per eye, depending upon the procedure used and the surgeon. While the cost may seem high, in the long run, you will most likely save money by not having to continually purchase new eyeglasses and/or lenses.

Why do you have to see different eye doctors for glasses versus lasik?

Doctors who prescribe glasses are not surgeons and cannot perform LASIK eye surgery. They can however advise you about whether you might be a candidate for the procedure, can perform some of the pre and post operative exams, and are usually informed on the subject. You will need to visit an eye surgeon to learn specifically about your situation and to have the procedure performed.

What demographic is more likely to need reading glasses?

Older people are way more likely to use reading glasses. As a person ages, everything in their body starts getting older. This includes eyesight. Older people just need a little more magnification when reading.

Where can I buy reading glasses?

Most drugstores and supermarkets with pharmacies will have a rack of reading glasses with various magnification strengths (usually between level 1. to level 2.5), styles, and price points available. Once you have determined what strength you need, you can also purchase reading glasses at Amazon, Readers.com or another site that ships your glasses directly to you. Be aware that you can end up with a pair of reading glasses with a flawed lens if you are buying cheap reading glasses online so try to use a reputable vender with a guaranteed return policy.
