Lime is used to change the soil pH, not to kill weeds. Soil pH values range from 0-14. Many of four garden and lawn plants prefer the 6.0-6.5 range. Below is falling into the acidic range. Above is heading into the alkaline range. It takes about a ton of lime per acre to raise the pH 1/2 point. Raising the pH can make it harder for plants to grow. But weeds have a much higher tolerance level for pain than plants. So they would handle any changes much better than plants.
