The problem is not really the eclipse itself. The issue is that looking at the Sun can be harmful to your eyes. Most of us don't spend a lot of time staring at the Sun normally, since there's not a whole lot of noticeable detail visible, but during an eclipse it's a different story... then we can tell there's something interesting going on, and we're much more likely to spend more time than we should looking at it to see what's happening.
