This depends, did the camera float? Just kidding and I apologize. If you have an inland marine or floater policy which specifically lists the camera that fell into the water then you would certainly want to file a claim and let them do their job. Whether or not the coverage is afforded is dependent upon the cause of the damage and the terms of the policy. File the claim and deal with your carrier. Be truthful in all aspects and do not try to bend your story to what you think will help it be covered.

I want to rent my video camera to someone. Can I get renter's insurance to cover it if it is damaged stolen or lost?

Yes, but typically the person responsible for the equipment insures it. If they have an accident that harms your camera, you would probably want them to make a claim instead of you so your claim history isn't affected. Check to see if they have renters or homeowners coverage and (if camera's not being used for business purposes) if it includes "damage to property of others" - I believe most if not all do. Otherwise, check with your agent or ask them to check with theirs about a Personal Article Floater. If it's business use, see link below for Take 1, a program designed specifically for this.

If you primarily use your camera for personal use or only charge or your services on occasion, then you are safe to add camera insurance to your homeowner's policy. How can a tenant obtain insurance that covers damage his carelessness caused to the property he rents?

It's usually called a "Floater Policy." When renting you should always get a damage deposit from the tenant and if they leave your suite in ruins at least your insurance will pay for it. You have the right to give 24 hours notice to your tenant (by letter) stating that you will be inspecting the suite. If you haven't prepared yourself with a "Floater Policy" or obtained a damage deposit from your tenant then I'm sorry to say the cost will be yours unless you go to small debts court and it may not be worth your time. Before renting again take a picture of the suite with the date on the picture (use a video camera if possible) get the damage deposit and do a 4 months inspection (giving 24 hours notice.)
