It really depends on where you download the sources from, all the onest I have downloaded are safe. And usually the people who upload them want you to join the server, and don't want to lose new players by giving the viruses.
If it is a direct download from Nexon/Maplestory they are more likely to be safe. I think v.83 and above get them from maplestory.
How to tell
1. The URL will look like something that nexon would put as a directory on their website.
2. It's not in lots of little parts.

First of all, it is not really easy to get a private server that isn't out-of-date. If people were to make one like this, they would have to update everything as MapleStory updates it. That's why they just keep it 1 simple version. Usually right after something big comes out, for example a new job. It's not really complicated downloading a private server. Just Download the version of the game the private server is, Download the client Download any additional files listed Put all the files in 1 folder Open the client (usually [thegamename.exe]) *replace thegamename with the name of the priviate server* Enjoy!
