What makes transition lenses transition?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photochromic_lenshotochromic lenses are lenses that darken on exposure to UV radiation. Once the UV is removed (for example by walking indoors), the lenses will gradually return to their clear state. Photochromic lenses may be made of either glass or plastic. The glass version of this type of lenses was first developed by Corning in the 1960s. More recently, plastic versions of these lenses have been commercialized. The first of these was the Photolite lens sold in the early 1980s by American Optical Corporation. The first commercially successful plastic photochromic lens was introduced by Transitions Optical in 1991.[1] The glass version of these lenses achieve their photochromic properties through the embedding of microcrystalline silver halides (usually silver chloride), or molecules in a glass substrate. Plastic photochromic lenses rely on organic photochromic molecules (for example oxazines and naphthopyrans) to achieve the reversible darkening effect. The reason these lenses darken in sunlight but not indoors under artificial light, is that room light does not contain the UV (short wavelength light) found in sunlight. Automobile windows also block UV so these lenses would darken less in a car. Lenses that darken in response to visible (rather than UV) light would avoid these issues, but they are not feasible for most applications. In order to respond to visible light, it is necessary to absorb it, thus the glass could not be made to be clear in its low-light state.

What is plastic polish most commonly used for?

Plastic polish is most commonly used for automobile exterior and interior. Plastic polish works well on cleaning turning signal light lenses, buffing out lines and nicks on windows and windshields, and cleaning brake lights.

Why spectacle lenses become misty when one steps out of an air-conditioned place?

If your glasses get cold enough in the air conditioned room then step into a warm humid outdoors some water vapor can condense on the glass.

Will eyeglass lenses crack in freezing temperatures?

ANSWER:No. The glass isn't thin enough to be effected by the gradient temperature change. If they were thinner, maybe. But most eye glasses are thick enough to accept the change in temperature.

Can you use Windex to clean prescription eye glasses?

You could, but far better is using mild soapy water then rinsed and patted dry. Avoid rubbing the lenses with cloth or tissue to avoid scratching the lenses, especially the lighter weight plastic lenses these days.

Do plastic glasses with polycarbonate lenses float?

Mine didn't.

How can you dissolve super glue that someone used to try to fix a pair of glasses when the screw came out?

Stores sell superglue solvents for that purpose. Also, if they are plastic lenses do not use acetone as it will melt the plastic lenses and you will have a much bigger problem than you started with I have just found out that using rubbing alcohol, cotton swaps and lots of energy and patience is getting it off of my plastic eye glasses. Although it is taking several hours but I think its well worth it seeing as how im not having to pay tons of money to get them replaced.

How do you remove oil based paint from eye glasses?

Are we talking lenses or frames? Very careful physical removal is probably the best way. If it is on the lenses and the lenses have a coating on them, there is a good chance that the coating has bonded with the paint. Sharp plastic like a plastic knife to 'push' the paint off the glasses.

How do you remove paint from polycarbonate lenses?

I spray painted my car and noticed over-spray on my polycarbonate eyeglass lenses the next morning. I tried soap and water but that removed none of the paint specks. I called my optometrist and they warned against using any solvent like paint remover or acetone on polycarbonate lenses. It would be OK on glass lenses, but i think polycarbonate is a plastic. So I tried 70% rubbing alcohol and some lens paper and with a little rubbing the paint specks came off. I quickly rinsed the lenses with water to remove the alcohol residue. The optometrist's office said it is not a good idea to let any substance besides water soak into the lenses as it may make them more brittle.

What is eyeglass lens made of?

Eyeglass lenses could be made of nearly any plastic or glass. For example, some glasses lens, such as my own, are made of a plastic called polycarbonate which is the material used to make bulletproof glass so my glasses are impact resistant. Other eyeglass lenses can be made from other plastics and glasses such as CR-39, Homopolyer and crown glass.

Why is a pair of glasses a pair if its only one?

When you say "glasses", it is plural. A "glass" is one of the lenses. "Glasses" would refer to both of the lenses, and a "pair of glasses" doesn't mention anything about the frame, but it mentions the two lenses. The frame is the object that joins the two lenses so you don't have to wear contacts and so it can stay on your head. When you say "a pair of glasses", you are referring to the "pair of lenses", not the frame. The frame holding the two lenses makes us think that it is one object, when the word "glasses" refers only to the lenses, not the frame. That is why it is called "a pair of glasses".
