Square Soft was the original company, which made the first final fantasy, planning it on being the last game the company would ever make, because it was going bankrupt, hence the 'final' fantasy. That's also why all the games are separate stories, because they didn't set up the first game to have a sequel. The game blew up though, and Square Soft eventually merged to become Square Enix. yup :)
