Mine, A red controller that came from Sony USA with the God of War games as a bundle and that currently fails to charge does not work when using the USB to provide power. Since I have many other controllers and multiple USB cables I have confirmed it is not the cable.
The PlayStation 3 wireless controller may not work via the USB connection when it fails to charge because the USB cable might be faulty.
