Can you get a return if you owe back taxes?

If you owe back taxes, the IRS will automatically deduct that amount from your refund. Depending on that amount, you can only receive what is left from that deduction.

What is a Tax Return?

A tax return is the money you receive back from the government when they calculate that you over pad on your taxes throughout the year. If taxes are automatically deducted from each paycheck, your paycheck is your net income. The government often takes more than they are supposed to receive. If you file your tax return documents on time, you will typically receive a check in the mail of the difference that you are owed. If your paychecks are given without deducting taxes, you will owe the IRS money at the end of the year.

Can you be penalized if you do not file your income taxes?

If you do not file your income taxes, you will owe the IRS 47.5% interest. For late filing, you will owe them 22.5% of the total and 25% if you don't file altogether.

Can you claim eic if you do not claim income?

No. You must report income to receive the Earned Income Credit. You must file a tax return to receive the credit, even if you otherwise would not have to. Any amount of the credit over the amount of taxes you owe will be refunded to you.

How do you find out if you owe the IRS?

The best way to determine if you owe the IRS is get a tax transcript. The IRS has a statue of limitations of seven years to access a tax, and ten years to collect after a tax return has been filed. The contact phone number for the IRS is 1-800-829-1040.

If you still owe for 2006 taxes, probably not.

Advance tax vs tax at source?

Estimated tax payments and tax at source are basically the same in the pay taxes as you pay these taxes when you receive income and then you get a credit on your 1040 income tax return for the advance estimated taxes that have been paid or withheld at the source of the income. If too much is paid in advance you will receive a refund of the over over paid amount. If NOT enough was paid in advance then you owe some additional amount when you have completed your 1040 income tax correctly and have it ready to send to the correct IRS address.

Do you have to pay income tax on taxable income if that was your only income?

Sure you do if you owe any amount after your income tax return is completely correctly.

What happens if you don't file an income tax return?

Not much of anything initially...then eventually about a year or so later you will start getting notices from the IRS that you have not filed a return. Also, if you wait too long to file a return (for instance you had to file a 2009 return by April 17, 2012) in order to get a refund. If you still haven't filed your return by then, you then forfeited any return you were entitled to. If you wait a really long time, the IRS will file a substitute return on your behalf without your input using the data they have, then the IRS will start their collection proceedings, which get ugly, like attaching bank accounts and any property you own. The IRS has an idea of how much you owe them based on what your employer submitted to them for income and how much you paid. They tend to be a bit more aggressive in cases where the believe you owe them money. There will also be penalties applied for late filing if you owe the IRS money. They are allowed to charge you 5% of the total amount for every month you are late. If the IRS owes you, then you don't pay any penalties. The best bet is to always file and extension, whether you need it or not. This gives you until August 15th to file a return instead of April 15th. Even if you file your return the following week, the extension was worth it because there will be no penalties due.

Does Canada have a statute of limitations on filing income taxes?

The CRA says that you are oligated to file an income tax return if you owe tax or if they ask you to file. Otherwise if you owe you still owe whether the return is done or not and they can audit you for up to 10 years after the fact if they feel that you have been fraudulent.
