The files which store the copy of your original data are called backup files. In windows backup files are created by NTbackup utility and windows backup and restore utilities. These backup files have .bkf file extension.
Data files for what? The system? Undoubtedly that'd be the system32 folder, but your best bet, look in the C:\WINDOWS\ folder for all of them.
It depends on how important those data files are to yourself. Data files are files that you put on the computer such as pictures, music, documents, etc. These files sometimes to users are more important than the actual system files. I would have to say that my data files are more important to me than system files but that's just because I can go in and re-install Windows and have my system running how it was previously in a matter of a few hours.
TMP or temp files are temporary Windows files used to store temporary data or be used as a backup for files that are being used.

If you select 'Upgrade', it only replaces system files, keeping your personal data/files/downloads. It is probably recommended to install a clean copy, though.
