The 1949 Legislature, in spite of efforts by white pine advocates, named the sugar maple the official state tree of Wisconsin by enacting Chapter 218, Laws of 1949, which created Section 1.10 of the statutes.

The largest tree in Wisconsin is found in the city of Montello. The tree is a cottonwood and is located in front of the historic Marquette County Courthouse and Granite Mansion.
His hanging from a tree was botched and it took 20 minutes for him to die of strangulation on 21 August 1851. It was the first use of Capital Punishment in the State and shortly thereafter executions were abolished in Wisconsin by Law. McCaffary is the only person to have ever been executed by the State of Wisconsin.
