I prefer nortons, especially the Norton Antivirus 2009. The reason is in the following:
Norton AntiVirus 2009 provides fast, responsive defense against all types of malicious software including viruses, spyware, worms, and other software threats. It protects your system without slowing it down. Rapid pulse updates every 5 to 15 minutes help to ensure that you're protected from the latest threats. Working quickly and quietly in the background, Norton AntiVirus requires little memory and system resources. The new Norton Insight relies on extensive online intelligence to target only those processes at risk, resulting in faster, shorter, fewer scans. And the new Norton Protection System employs a multilayered set of security technologies that work in concert to detect, identify, and block attacks. Version 2009 improves on product performance. http://www.antivirusroot.com/Norton-AntiVirus-2009.html

NOD32, no doubt. Effective and lighter.
One of the safest places to get backup software on the net is from a legitimate site that offers such things. Sites such as Carbonite, McAfee, and Nortons, offer such services and products for a nominal fee. C-Net is a site where a person is able to try out the software before purchasing it.
If you have McAfee, I recommend that you uninstall it. I used to have McAfee and if it detects a virus, it will quarantine it, but not delete it. You're better off installing Symantec or Norton 360.
McAfee was founded in 1989 by John McAfee.
mcafee is the best it's a great price and its better then most of them like it doesn't take up that much memory on your laptop so get mcafee.

McAfee scans mainly for viruses but it does detect a lot of spyware and trojans. It would be better to run an anti spyware program along with it.
