In some species, you can't really tell unless you are an expert with special tools. If the turtles are babies, you also probably won't be able to tell.

In adults, MOST male turtles have a longer tail than the female, and a concave plastron (the bottom shell). The concave shell allows him to sit on the female's back without slipping off so easily.

In some water turtles, the male will have very long front claws, which he will use to court the female.
