By nature, each sex has areas where their natural bent excels. For instance, most women can handle several things happening at once, while men tend to manage one thing at a time. Some people are big picture people, others are detail oriented. Just a different outlook in managing information. So, depending on the type of information/skills you are examining, there may be entirely opposite results.

That said, in 2009, there are more women than men attending universities and obtaining degrees. Thirty five years ago, two-thirds of students were men; one third was women. So, currently, there are certainly more learned women. Smarter?? Not necessarily, but wiser in being able to manage the technical complexities of the future.

IQ tests are fun to take and may be a measure of some types of intelligence, but creating a 100% correct testing of all types of intelligence is not possible. Yet. To me, the best measure is how the person meets the needs of life.

The subject in itself is, to a large extent, taboo in these days of political correctness.

A study by Dr John Philippe Rushton, published in 2006, analysing university aptitude tests of 100,000 students of both sexes aged 17 and 18 shows a 3.63 points difference in favor of men. Other studies based on university level individuals confirm these results, but also show that the IQ distribution varies according to gender. In short, men have more extreme results than women (with twice as many men than women around 125, and five times as many at level 170).

Circumstancial evidence shows that this model may be valid for the general population, witha slight general advantage for men. It is to be noted that men outnumber women at both extremities of the spectrum (meaning there are more men far above average, as well far below average than there are women).

Considerable efforts have been deployed during the past two or three generations to prove that any difference in abilities, talents, or intelligence was caused by a variety of external factors, such as social expectations or education. Only recently have some academics dared to challenge this belief, and put the general consensus to the test.

It takes some of courage to do so, when one's work will be accepted only if it reinforces the the general belief, and when any other conclusion may cost you your position, and expose you to ridicule and ostracism.

The figures mentioned earlier are widely available on the internet, and when posted in forums or "blogs", generated plenty of reactions. A quick perusal of those was very entertaining, and revealing of how scientific facts that go against the official canon are received, particularly by the young users of interractive media....

It may also be useful to remember that, throughout the known history, there has been no female genius, in any field. No amount of repression, denial, rejection or male control could have prevented at least some gem to survive, and even nowadays, when "positive discrimination" is in full effect, women still have to count an Einstein of their own....

More seriously, none of the above should lead to the conclusion than women are unintelligent. They are simply more numerous to be in the average. Many are quite intelligent and competent , often a "comfort zone" located at the middle-management level. Moreover, a high IQ yelds no guaranty as to how or even if the potential will be used.

A final note for those who would wonder why girls often do better at school than boys: boys mature slower but longer than girls, and mixed schools (the vast majority of schools) are definitely geared towards encouraging average results and the greatest possible docility. Good results from boys may require methods and a conception of education that are definitely not very popular these days....
