working in a homeless shelter...learn how to read
A good place to start would be Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee. They focus on not only finding you a job but giving you the skills necessary to succeed. They have many outreach programs for the homeless. Also getting into contact with the Nashville Homeless Power Project might not be a bad idea. They are a community activist group that fights on the behalf of the homeless and are part of a coalition that helps the homeless get back on their feet.
Some Part-time jobs are: Volunteering at a local animal shelter, working at a kennel, and volunteering at a local animal hospital.

Yes. There are many homeless who are well educated and have chosen to be on the streets, and then there are those who have fallen through the cracks. These people do need to have some sort of training or education to get off the streets. About 25 million children are part of this problem. Many of them move from school to school never getting the needed skills for the future and they will add to the homeless problem in the future without the skills of reading, writing, and math. It is vital that we get services and education to these children.
