There are a couple different ways, if you mean pet as in a companion you can buy them in your factions cities, off of the Auction House, world drops, in the WoW: TCG card game.
And if you mean as a pet-pet that attacks things as you do, you need to roll a class that uses pets. These include hunters, warlocks, and death knights. Hunters can tame beasts in the world and use them to fight alongside them. Warlocks can learn spells to call a few demon pets to fight with them. Death knights can summon a ghoul to fight for them for a limited time (unless you are unholy then it is a permanent pet).

You simply re-summon it. If you are talking about a hunter pet that dies in battle, then you have to use the hunter spell "Revivie Pet".
Talk to a stable master, buy one or more slots for your pets, and click the empty slot to put your pet in it.
Revive pet is a skill you get as soon as you learn how to tame pets. The skill will be located in your spell book.
