He may be referring to the First War of the Warcraft universe. Whilst it is in dispute, seeing that Doomhammer was quite close to completely dominating Azeroth, the Alliance made a sweeping comeback and I'm -fairly- sure ended up winning the first war, as well as the second. The third they formed an Alliance- as the orcish speaking Horde deserted most of their warlike ways in preference of peaceful shamanism, and the forth war or the current WoW war, they are holding a tense peace with occasional skirmishes of factions.
In the first and second war, the Horde were clearly the "Bad guys." Now you really can't tell anymore, as they just want peace and to be left to Kalimdor, but the Alliance continue to press on them to avenge those who fell while the Horde was still bloodthirsty.
