About the same as Union and Confederates did in the US Civil War...they spoke the same language but had different accents.
same reason America fought with Britain.... Freedom, liberty, unhappy with the way things were ran
In the US Civil War, Confederate soldiers from the South fought against Union soldiers from the North. Both sides had to resort to conscription to keep their armies at full strength. The South passed draft laws first then the North had to do the same.

During the Civil War the digging works were carried out by: The units of Engineers Corps of both Armies, The slaves, employed by the Confederates to set up entrenched camps and lines, field fortifications, repair roads, bridges, railroads etc. The escaped slaves, employed by the Federals, though not in the same number as the Confederates did with the slaves.
South Carolina Dec 1860. First confederates Feb 1861 . Full confederate states combined after fort Sumter same goes for the USA.
Because before the civil war, the confederates were from the south and the south having many plantations relied on slave labor to make a profit from cash crops. Generations of owning slaves just inbred racism is my guess.
