A fish will have more oxygen in a tank with a larger surface area, ie. a tank that is longer instead of one that is taller. However, you can increase the gas exchange by making sure the surface is being agitated with either aeration (bubble maker) or "hang-on-back" style filters.

Gas exchange happens when the surface of the water is agitated and the surface tension is broken. Once this happens carbon dioxide in the water is exchanged for oxygen in the atmosphere.

So, make sure you keep the water surface sufficiently agitated and your fishy friends will get plenty of oxygen.

Does fish respiration change with the size of the fish?

Yes. Larger fishes frequently need more oxygen than smaller fishes in order to power their muscles. But this can vary. For example, a whale shark, which can reach sixty feet, is a relatively slow swimmer compared to a ten foot tuna, which needs a greater amount of oxygen because of it's more active lifestyle.

Which type of fish would be more higher in numbers in the lake minnows or bass?

Smaller fish like minnows and shad.

If you fish in four ponds will more fish be caught in the two ponds with the lowest oxygen concentrations or the two ponds with highest oxygen concentrations?

Fish are generally more abundant in ponds with higher oxygen concentrations, as oxygen is essential for their survival and activity. Therefore, you are likely to catch more fish in the two ponds with the highest oxygen concentrations. While some fish can tolerate lower oxygen levels, the overall likelihood of catching fish is greater in the healthier, oxygen-rich environments.

What reduces oxygen is ponds?

this is correct as the fish cause a bacteria to be generated as they are in a cramped environment. this bacteria saps oxygen from the fish, so the fish in the pond take more oxygen. then the plants take in more oxygen to try and compete so they can respire (not photosynthesize.

Why does a pond with more oxygen have more fish?

What would happen if Great White Sharks went extinct?

The ecosystem of the ocean is basically bigger fish eat smaller fish that eat smaller fish that eat algae. If they went extinct, there would be to many medium fish eating then causing those smaller fish that eat algae to die out, thus creating a domino effect. Because then, the algae would take over the coral reefs, causing animals who claim it as their home to die out. Thus causing a largely overload on the medium fish, who will later have no more smaller fish because their habitat has been destroyed, will mean a barren and dead ocean.

What can you conclude from seeing identical containers with identical fish in them but with different volume of water in each container?

The one with the greater surface area would have more oxygen available to the fish. The one with the greater volume has a fixed amount of oxygen that can be dissolved in a given amount. The one with the greater surface area has more oxygen available over time.

Which would you be more likey to measure in centimeters a fish tank or a swimming pool?

You would be more likely to measure a fish tank in centimeters because it is typically smaller and requires more precise measurements. A swimming pool, on the other hand, is usually larger and would be measured in meters or feet.

How would frigid Antarctic waters affect the ice fish's need for oxygen?

Antarctic waters are higher in oxygen content than are other oceans. This means that oxygen is more freely available to these animals in the Southern Ocean.

Why are fish gill arranged in stacks?

To incease the surface area of the gills so more oxygen can be diffused from the water the fish swims in into there bloodstream where the oxygen can be carried the fish's cells for cellular respiration

Would you use grams or kilograms to measure a fish?

To measure a fish, you would typically use kilograms, especially for larger fish, as it provides a more practical and manageable unit for weight. For smaller fish, grams can be used, but kilograms are generally preferred for ease of understanding and to avoid using large numbers.

Why will a fish in a jar die after some time?

The fish gets its oxygen from the water, from the limited amount dissolved there. Unless more oxygen is added to the water, the fish will "drown" (asphyxiate). In goldfish bowls, it is important to trickle in some water regularly to encourage oxygen intake while also balancing evaporation. In larger aquariums, or with more fish, an aerator bubbles air through the water to add oxygen.
