The Marsh mongoose eats almost any meat and fruit, making it an eating machine. if you would want it as a pet, you would want to have it live outside, in a large area, the habitat would have to be marsh-like, and with shallow water in some parts. In some parts of Africa, the marsh mongoose is tamed at a young age, and can get very good at being around humans. So you would want the mongoose you got to be young, and it's habitat as much as possible, homelike.

no a ferret is a animal but lots of people have them as pets
No! Primates do not make good pets, nor any other wild animals!
They are illegal in the United States, first of all, and secondly they would make terrible pets, unless you could support thirty-something mongooses and give them room for a burrow in an area with plenty of hunting ground, I.E. in a national park in their native land. That's if your planning to have one of the social species of mongoose (Meerkats, Banded Mongooses, Yellow Mongooses, Kusimanses, etc.) If you wanted one as a pet, you'd want either an Egyptian mongoose (The Ichneumon) or a White-tailed mongooses, which are the largest mongooses and also solo hunters. However, being solitary animals, they would be exceedingly difficult to tame; you'd likely lose a few fingertips.
