Probably not. Most PlayStation games are region locked, just as movies are. New Zealand is region 4 and the US is region 1, therefore your American games will be incompatable with a New Zealand PS2, and a New Zealand PlayStation first edition, for that matter.

They have a few games for smaller children. If you aren't set on a PlayStation then I would suggest a Wii, they have more kid friendly games.
