Answer Military time is used as anyone would use time. The military uses a 24-hour clock. They would refer to 5:00pm as 1700. This helps to ensure that there is no confusion as to what time of day, morning or afternoon, that is meant.
1AM =0100
2=0200
3=0300
4=0400
...
11AM=1100
12=1200
1pm=1300
2=1400
etc.
so 1445 hrs = 2:45 PM
the minutes stay the same.
1759 hrs= 5:49 PM
2359 hrs= 11:59 PM
0133 hrs= 1:33 AM
The (US) military counts time from midnight to midnight in one continuous count.
The day commences with 0001, and end at 2359.
You civilians would count normally up to Noon. From 1:00 p.m, just add 12 to each of the numbers. For example, 1:00 p.m. would be 1300 hours (spoken aloud as 'thirteen hundred hours'), 8:00 p.m. would 2000 hours (spoken aloud as 'twenty hundred hours') and so forth.
Now if that's not confusing enough, please see the related link below for a little rib-tickling radio conversation with 'the tower', alleged to be a true exchange.
