you cannot increase the voltage by replacing a capacitor. A capacitor is a passive components it has no gain.
The voltage regulator for a 300e Mercedes is mounted on the rear of the alternator. The regulator is a replaceable item, independent from the alternator.

Sounds like the Diode or the Voltage Regulator is going out on the alternator. I would recomend replacing soon. When one of those 2 componets go out, it really over heats the alternator. This causes the bearings on the back side of the alternator to fail, and sieze. This has cause some fires in GM cars and trucks.

If the generator voltage always drops below a given voltage level for all faults in which operation is required, the voltage-controlled overcurrent unit may be set to provide faster overall clearing speed
