There is not enough room here to try to take you through all the steps to tear down an engine, determine what all needs to be done in a rebuild and then take the required steps to do a credible rebuild. I would suggest you get a repair manual, Chilton or Haynes. There you will find the process broken down to individual processes that will result in a decent rebuild. Good luck.
it is hard to state when is the right time to rebuild or replace a veh engine .but here is the best answer to my knowlege you would have to find info on your veh engine spec's have a known good mechanic performe a manual compression test and determing if veh has low compression then you can rely on this for your sence if to replace or not ,..
If the piston rings are worn out you are probably looking at an engine rebuild. Without the proper tools and knowledge this would more than the average person could handle. Better off considering a new, reman or good used engine replacement.
If the rest of the engine is sound, replace it with a crank kit. If the engine itself was in poor shape, it would be best to rebuild the engine, or get one from a salvage yard.
