Sumer was the first recorded civilization to inhabit Mesopotamia. They were also the first to create a religion. There's was mythological.

One fact about Sumerian religion is that the gods of the Sumerian religion were anthropomorphic Gods who ate, drank, had relationships, had kids, and expressed emotions.

My opinion on this is that, as the earliest form of religion, it seems quite plausible that this could be true. Not only did the first civilization associate with a polytheistic religion, but several other polytheistic religions have been created around much the same principal of human-like Gods. Since it is also noted before Christianity and many other religions, it seems to be the most likely.
